COLUMBIA, MISSOURI, May 23, 2023 – McClure received four 2023 Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) awards.

Triangle Square – First Place, Residential / Hospitality

Triangle Square is a 298-unit residential apartment building located in the Bucktown neighborhood just west of downtown Chicago. The east-facing luxury apartment units have a spectacular view of the skyline from their uncovered terraces. The structure consists of six stories of cold-formed steel (CFS) framing above a single-story concrete podium. The building is framed with C-stud joists spanning between demising walls with a gypcrete over metal deck floor system. It is also accented by its sloped roof structure which highlights the ingenuity required to create this complex architectural masterpiece.

“The project highlights our ability to work in three-dimensional space during design so that the structure can go together quickly and efficiently during construction,” said Marcus Himmelberg, Structural Project Manager.

Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine – First Place, Municipal / Cultural

The Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine is a two-story steel-framed Church located in Oklahoma City. The facility is a new 40,000-square-foot structure that displays ornate details, towers, clerestory, interior and exterior domes, as well as interior barrel vaults and pendentive framing.

“After the framing was finished, we found out that the light GFRC finish was changed to solid stone- adding ~12,000lbs of unexpected weight after it was designed and partially constructed, creating an engineering challenge to keep the current framing,” said Josh Garton, Structural Project Manager.

Titletown Multi-Family Residential – Second Place, Creative Detail

The Titletown multi-family residential building is located in the heart of the Green Bay, Wisconsin area. As the name of the building implies, it is associated with the Green Bay Packers local commercial area known for their historically successful National Football League team. The view of Lambeau Field is uninterrupted when peering from the east side of the new structure. The overall project consists of a 6-story CFS building above a single-story podium. The typical floor construction is gypcrete over CFS open web joists spanning from demising wall to demising wall. The structural lateral system on the project was CFS strap braced shear walls and the building exterior consists of balconies that stagger in 32ft bays up the building.

“This project required some creative detailing and connections to achieve the high-profile architectural balconies on the building. Although difficult to detail, I have to admit the resulting building looks good. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend a Packers game during construction but look forward to visiting in the future,“ said Marcus Himmelberg, Structural Project Manager.

All Saints Orthodox Church – Second Place – Municipal / Cultural

The All Saints Orthodox Church is a two-story primarily wood structure serving as a place of worship. As is common with religious buildings, grand finials and archways help create an elegant and eye-catching interior and exterior. The overall project consists of wood-framed walls, floor joists, and roof joists. The arched surfaces on both the interior and exterior are framed with curved cold-formed steel (CFS) studs, as well as three exterior CFS domes and one half-dome. Curved structural steel is employed to support the main dome.

“The roof barrel to radiused dormer transition has a doubly curved twisting beam, which due to the geometry, isn’t even a square shape. It’s a unique detail that required some creative detailing to accomplish,” said Josh Garton, Structural Project Manager.
