Celebrating 70 Years of McClure

by | Apr 15, 2026 | News

ANKENY, IOWA, April 15, 2026 —

A Legacy as Strong as Platinum

Strength. Durability. Resilience. These are the qualities associated with platinum, the traditional symbol of a 70th anniversary. They’re also the qualities that define McClure.

For seven decades, McClure has built an enduring reputation for making lives better alongside the communities we’re fortunate to serve. That longevity is rooted in an unbreakable commitment to strong relationships, purposeful partnerships, and a foundation built to adapt and endure, showing the same strength and malleability as platinum.

A Strong Beginning: 1956 in Jefferson, Iowa

Our story began in 1956, a transformative year in American history. The signing of the National Highway Act launched the interstate system and ushered in a new era of mobility, connectivity, and economic growth. Post war America was thriving, consumer culture expanded, and new technologies began reshaping daily life.
Black and white televisions appeared in living rooms. Non stick cookware found its way into kitchens. Families gathered to watch Elvis Presley debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, experiencing cultural change in real time.
Amid this momentum, Jon McClure founded McClure Engineering Company in Jefferson, Iowa, with a clear purpose: strengthening communities through practical, forward thinking solutions.

In 1957, Jon partnered with Don Culver to form McClure & Culver Consulting Engineers, accelerating the firm’s early growth. In 1963, the firm relocated to Fort Dodge, Iowa, where McClure continues to be an engaged and trusted community partner all these decades later.

Strategic Expansion: Growth with Intention

By the mid 1980s, McClure began expanding beyond Fort Dodge. In 1986, the firm opened an office in the Des Moines metro, followed by growth into the Iowa City area, establishing a strong statewide presence.
The next major milestone came in 2014 with the opening of McClure’s Sioux City office. In 2015, we acquired Trabue, Hansen & Hinshaw Inc. (THHinc) in Columbia, Missouri, expanding both our capabilities and regional reach.

In 2018, we acquired Shafer, Kline & Warren (SKW), strengthening our bridge engineering expertise and deepening our presence in the Kansas City metro. Growth continued eastward in 2023 when McClure acquired Iron Engineering, a leader in cold formed steel structural engineering headquartered in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. A year later, in 2024, McClure opened an office in Boston, extending our reach into the eastern United States.

Who We Are Today

Today, McClure is a full service engineering, surveying, and planning firm committed to making lives better and building relationships for success. With multidisciplinary expertise and a growing geographic footprint, we partner with communities across the country to help move projects and people forward with confidence.

“What gives me a great sense of pride is looking at how much our industry and the world have completely changed in the last seventy years, but the values McClure was founded on have endured,” said Dustin Leo, Chief Execetive Officer of McClure. “Our people still show up with the same commitment, integrity, kindness, and drive that defined this firm from day one. And yes, we still have fun doing it. That consistency in purpose, in culture, and in how we treat the people we serve is what seventy years is really built on.”

The McClure Difference: People, Values, Partnerships

Our growth from a small Iowa town to a national presence has never been accidental. McClure’s progress has been shaped by intention, strong values, and a long term view focused on people, clients, and community impact.

Our people drive our success, guided by core values of commitment, integrity, kindness, drive, and fun. Team members show up fully, support one another, and consistently do the right thing for clients and communities. With a shared commitment to excellence and a drive to continually improve, McClure fosters an environment where innovation thrives, collaboration is valued, and people are proud of the work they deliver.

This culture leads to true partnerships with clients at every step of the way. By thinking like owners, developers, city leaders, and stakeholders, we help communities navigate everything from funding strategies and public engagement to project design and delivery.

Clients for Life

From water and wastewater systems to roadways, aviation, development, planning, landscape architecture, surveying, and structural engineering, we’ve partnered with clients across the country to help shape resilient, thriving communities.

These efforts represent more than services delivered; they reflect relationships built to last. In communities such as Le Mars, Fort Dodge, Adel, Altoona, Ankeny, Spencer, Davenport, Burlington, and countless others nationwide, we’ve earned the trust of clients and communities through consistency, collaboration, and results.

These longstanding partnerships define McClure’s Clients for Life philosophy, grounded in proactive communication, shared goals, and a commitment to standing with clients not just for a project, but for a lifetime.

Seventy Years, Shared

Seventy years of success wouldn’t be possible without the people and partners who made it happen. Our story is shaped by dedicated employees, past and present, who bring passion, expertise, and care to their work every day. It’s strengthened by clients who place their trust in us time and again and by communities that welcome us as long term partners in progress.

To each of you who has played a role in McClure’s journey: Thank you for being part of this legacy.
