Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an airport runway need to be?

Runway length is based on a multitude of factors: maximum takeoff weight of aircraft, airport elevation, and temperature to name a few. When determining a runway’s recommended length, it is important to identify a listing of critical aircraft that will have the most significant impact in obtaining a recommended runway length. Typical general aviation airport runways can range from 3,200 – 5,500 feet while typical commercial service airport runways can range from 6,000 – 16,000 feet. For guidance on the FAA’s process of evaluating runway lengths, refer to FAA Advisory Circular 150/5325-4 Runway Length Requirements for Airport Design.
