ANKENY, IOWA, July 30, 2026 - This National Intern Day, McClure is celebrating the 35 interns who spent their summer gaining hands-on experience and contributing to projects across McClure.
Working from McClure offices across the Midwest and East Coast, our interns supported teams in aviation, development, transportation, survey, structural, and water. Throughout the summer, they worked alongside experienced professionals, developed technical skills, and gained firsthand exposure from the projects that help shape communities. From field work and site visits to design tasks and client projects, our interns were able to apply classroom knowledge in a professional setting while building the skills needed for their future careers.
Several interns shared what stood out most from their summer at McClure:
“This summer I have had the pleasure to work on billable projects for clients, and I’ve gotten to engineer building components for upcoming construction projects in multiple different states. I also got to learn about the building codes and how they are applied to real world engineering applications. I’ve learned a lot about cold-formed steel, client relationships, structural components, and teamwork. I’m excited to apply the experiences I have gained in my future endeavors.”

“I think the biggest thing I have learned during this internship is how much I love being outdoors, how much I am a morning person, and how important it is to be an active learner. Asking questions and being willing to learn by doing, have helped me learn so much this summer. Also, whether it’s hiking in the woods in the morning or working in an industrial park, the feeling of getting a job done, being outside, traveling, and seeing the results of my work have made me genuinely look forward to working again day after day. I guess the biggest thing I have learned is how much I really enjoy surveying!”

“The most valuable part of my internship has been learning all of the details that go into surveying before construction gets started. I’ve also gotten better at communicating by learning from my crew chief and talking with contractors. We’ve been working on Kayak Park right along the Des Moines River, which has been very cool. I’ve been able to visit a lot of new places. Coming from a small town in Iowa, spending the summer in Des Moines has been a big change and a great experience. It’s been exciting to see so many interesting buildings and projects throughout the area.”

“This internship has been great for me because I’ve never done anything development-based before. I was introduced to Civil 3D and have been learning about topography, creating base drawings, grading, and redlines. I’ve also had the opportunity to sit in on meetings and see what people’s day-to-day work is like.”

“This summer I’ve worked on several transportation projects, including intersection improvement, roadway improvement and culvert replacement. These projects have given me valuable exposure to different aspects of construction and project execution. I’ve learned a great deal by being on-site and observing how projects are built in the real world. Watching the construction process, from excavation, chipping to filling, paving has helped me better understand how engineering plans are put into practice and gain hands-on experience.”

“I have been learning how to use Bentley software, and I’ve also gained a lot of experience on construction sites, including how to test concrete and communicate with contractors. The most valuable part of my internship has been all of the experience I’ve gained. It has helped me learn more about the industry and figure out what I want to do in my future career.”

“As a software engineering intern, I’ve been working with multiple teams on projects and creating tools that help team members across McClure. I’ve been developing tools that improve how our softwares work together, as well as new tools that make people’s lives easier. Seeing people use the tools I’m creating in real time and knowing they make their work easier means a great deal to me.”
