Bowling Green Municipal Airport, Two-Unit Box Hangar

Bowling Green Municipal Airport, Two-Unit Box Hangar

Bowling Green, MO

McClure assisted the Bowling Green Municipal Airport with the design and construction of a two-unit box hangar, including an update to the Airport's Layout Plan (ALP) drawings. The airport has a constantly expanding and vibrant aviation tenant community and FBO services. New aircraft storage facilities are in demand while existing hangars are in need of renovation or replacement. As a result, in July of 2022, the City of Bowling Green tasked McClure with providing design and bidding services in connection with the multi-unit box hangar project. A construction administration services agreement was added in June of 2023.

An area located on the north side of the terminal apron between the aviation fueling facility on the west and an existing box hangar to the east was identified as the location of the multi-unit box hangar. The hangar utilizes an existing apron currently servicing the terminal hangar. McClure coordinated and worked closely with Missouri Department of Transportation Aviation personnel, including Millicent Parker, Darrel Goth, and Andrew Hanks to complete the hangar design and construction requirements.

The $1.1M project consisted of one 140' wide by 60' deep box hangar. The box hangar has two units, one 80' wide by 60' deep unit and one 60' wide by 60' deep unit. Also included are the following:

• 80' wide aircraft access door & 60' wide aircraft access door
• 18' of minimum clear height throughout each unit
• 2-hour fire rating on the west wall
• 3-hour fire rating on the east wall

Highlights

  • The construction of the project allows the airport to better serve their aviation tenant community and FBO services. Limited space existed between the aviation fueling facility and existing terminal hangar. The project was designed at a specific size to utilize all existing space and to accommodate characteristics of certain aircraft. McClure worked closely with the Missouri Building Department to receive a variance to accommodate the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Using the limited space allows the airport to use the other space in the terminal area for future hangars.
