High Street Pedestrian Improvements

High Street Pedestrian Improvements

Acton, MA

The Town of Acton engaged McClure to provide engineering design services for pedestrian safety improvements along High Street at the intersections of Faulkner Hill Road and Conant Street. These locations were identified in the Town’s 2021 Road Safety Audit as high-priority areas for safer pedestrian infrastructure. Building on preliminary concepts developed by the Town, McClure was tasked with advancing the design to construction-ready documents.

The project includes new marked crosswalks, Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), ADA-compliant curb ramps, and median refuge islands—either raised or mountable with stamped or scored concrete. Associated signage and pavement markings will also be updated to improve visibility and safety for pedestrians.

McClure’s work is organized into three phases: preliminary design, final design, and construction administration. Initial tasks included a site visit, development of 10% conceptual plans, and a high-level cost estimate to support funding efforts. Final design deliverables included detailed engineering drawings, specifications, special provisions, and itemized construction cost estimates using MassDOT bid pricing. Construction support includes responding to bidder questions and reviewing RRFB shop drawings.

While the project does not include roadway widening, utility research, or permitting, McClure will identify any additional survey needs and may provide further support under a separate agreement. This project is part of the Town’s continued investment in safer, more accessible pedestrian infrastructure.
