Independence Intersection Improvements

Independence Intersection Improvements

Independence, MO

Over the last five years, the City of Independence has sought to improve intersections previously white-topped and reconstructed with concrete less than a decade ago that has been in various states of failure. Two design-build contracts and a conventional design-bid-build contract later, McClure teamed with Superior Bowen to reconstruct a dozen high volume intersections, while also adding the DBIA Mid-America Region’s coveted Design-Build Project of the Year in 2018. Our collective team assisted the City of Independence with massive structural repairs to key corridors throughout the city. The improvements also give the residents of Independence something to be proud of while providing smooth, safe, and aesthetically pleasing roads for visitors, businesses, and residents alike. Our project was a lynchpin in the 2017 renewal of a sales tax vote that passed by a margin exceeding 80%.
The existing deteriorated concrete white topping was removed by cold milling and replaced with an asphalt intermediate course followed by a Stone Matrix Asphalt surface course. Any necessary full-depth repairs base repairs were identified and completed before resurfacing. Our unique scheduling approach also allowed us to be extremely efficient in getting the projects completed. We closed each intersection on a Friday evening after the rush hour and had them fully reopened to traffic on a Monday morning. Our teams worked around the clock through the nights and weekends to provide a solution that minimized disruption to the traveling public. ADA upgrades to current standards, touch button crosswalks, and improvements to signalization were all a part of each project. Each contract (3) was designed and constructed in the same calendar year and none exceeded the budgets set early in the process.
