Northwood Road Improvements

Northwood Road Improvements

Kansas City, MO

McClure provided design and survey services for the improvement of Northwood Road from 52nd Street to 59th Terrace in Kansas City, Missouri. The project addressed steep grades and crest hills, widened the roadway, replaced water mains, and added new pedestrian infrastructure, including sidewalks and a shared-use trail. A new roundabout was constructed at the intersection of Northwood Road and 56th Street to improve traffic flow. The 4,740-foot corridor now features a 24-foot typical roadway section with curb and gutter, enclosed storm drainage, new street lighting, and enhanced crosswalks and intersection improvements near Southeast Elementary School. The project also included retaining walls and continuous sidewalks, with traffic control measures carefully designed to maintain access for local residents throughout construction.

Significant utility coordination was required after KCMO Water Services altered its design concept mid-project, prompting major redesign efforts. Soon after, the Kansas City Council mandated changes to the roadway typical section, which necessitated updates to cross-sections, drainage layouts, and other key elements. McClure navigated these evolving conditions to deliver a final design that bid below the Engineer’s estimate and required minimal changes during construction.
