South Sycamore Street Reconstruction
Iowa City, IA
The City of Iowa City faced a tight timeline to deliver critical infrastructure improvements supporting the planned opening of Alexander Elementary School on the city’s south side. To meet the Iowa City Community School District’s goal of opening the school by Fall 2015, roadway and utility upgrades were required along a half-mile stretch of former county road.
McClure led both the Preliminary and Final Design phases, adapting the original plans by revising the typical roadway section and replacing traditional intersections with roundabouts to improve traffic flow and safety. Despite these mid-project changes, the team successfully delivered all design documents on time and within budget, ensuring the project remained on schedule.
The design also incorporated a stormwater outfall channel to direct runoff to the Makada Buffer wetland, contributing to the broader South Sycamore Storm Water Quality initiative.
