Ankeny Regional Airport, Taxiway D Apron and Access Road

Ankeny Regional Airport, Taxiway D Apron and Access Road

Ankeny, IA

To address the growing demand for aircraft storage, the Ankeny Regional Airport is advancing infrastructure improvements aimed at supporting new hangar development. With a waiting list of over 50 potential tenants expressing strong interest in hangar occupancy, the need for expanded facilities is both urgent and significant. In response, the Polk County Aviation Authority engaged McClure to provide design, bidding, and construction administration services for the development of aircraft parking aprons along the Taxiway D Access Road as part of Phases 2 and 3 of the airport’s expansion efforts.

The primary goal of these projects is to encourage private investment in vertical infrastructure by preparing hangar sites with the necessary airside and landside improvements. McClure’s work included designing a paved access road to connect to the future hangars in Phases 2 and 3, constructing aircraft parking aprons adjacent to the proposed hangar sites, and relocating an existing drainage ditch to accommodate the new access road and building footprints. In addition, McClure provided utility service connections to each hangar location, including 6-inch PVC sanitary sewer service, 6-inch ductile iron pipe (DIP) water service, electric service, natural gas, and high-speed fiber internet. The team also established access road elevations to align with each hangar's parking and access needs, ensuring seamless connectivity and functionality for both vehicles and aircraft.

Throughout the project, McClure has worked closely with the Polk County Aviation Authority and potential hangar tenants to ensure the project remains on schedule and within budget. Notably, Phase 3 was accelerated significantly—designed and bid in under three months—to meet the timeline of an eager tenant who aimed to begin hangar construction before the winter of 2021. This fast-tracked delivery reflects the collaborative effort and commitment to supporting continued growth and investment at Ankeny Regional Airport.
