Grand Avenue (South 88th Street to South Grand Prairie Parkway)
West Des Moines, IA
As West Des Moines continues to grow at a fast pace, they were in need of a reliable and quick acting consultant to perform the design and construction services for the Grand Avenue Extension project. They selected McClure for this project, which included roadway, trails, drainage, bridge, and geotechnical design for a new crossing of Sugar Creek. This fast tracked project included the design of a three-span Pretensioned Prestressed Concrete Beam bridge on a unique horizontally curved alignment with integral abutments, single-row encased wall piers, and a shared use path with aesthetic railings. To aid in construction speed, the bridge was designed on span-chords with horizontally curved deck deges and variable width exterior beam overhangs, such that Iowa DOT standard prestressed beams may be utilized. Additionally, McClure designed final grading along Sugar Creek with benching and landscaping to allow for more flood capacity storage within stream channel to reduce the chances of private property flooding.
In addition to the design, McClure performed topographic and boundary survey, project permitting, right-of-way design and plats, utility coordination, stakeholder coordination, construction administration, and construction observation services.
