MISSOURI UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PEDESTRIAN UNDERPASS

Project Overview

McClure led the preliminary study team as well as the full design team for implementation of a new pedestrian underpass below Highway 63 on Missouri S&T’s campus. Project scope included roadway improvements to Highway 63, precast arch structure, utility relocations, a new pedestrian promenade, and enhancements to site lighting. Project phasing and timing was critical to minimize roadway closure times and impacts to students and faculty on Missouri S&T’s campus.

Project Highlights

  • Multiple meetings were held between various project stakeholders including campus police, MoDOT, emergency services, Missouri S&T Marketing Department, Missouri S&T Chancellor, Residential Life, and building directors to plan and phase construction activities to reduce overall impact to campus and public operations.
  • Various underpass structure systems were considered and ultimately a precast arch system was selected to reduce future maintenance and minimize closure times for Highway 63. Highway 63 reconstruction and installation of the underpass was able to be completed ahead of the allowed closure time frame.
  • McClure worked with Missouri S&T’s staff to design a lighted mural on the underpass walls to further enhance the pedestrian experience thru the underpass.
