Nantucket Bridge Assessment Study

Nantucket Bridge Assessment Study

Nantucket, ME

McClure was tasked with providing engineering services for inspecting, assessing, and providing preservation recommendations for two municipally owned bridges in the Town of Nantucket: the Ames Avenue Bridge (Bridge N-02-003 (442)) and the Massasoit Road Bridge (Bridge N-02-004 (443)) are both multi-span timber bridges on timber pile bent pile substructures. The scope included reviewing existing as-built plans, inspecting the bridges, identifying damage or age-related degradation, and recommending repairs to maintain structural integrity. These services focus on preservation and maintenance as these bridges are in locations susceptible to climate events and are not currently candidates for replacement.

Highlights

  • Included summaries of existing conditions, photo documentation, maintenance and preservation recommendations, and cost estimates
  • Developed a prioritized list of preservation activities for each bridge to maintain serviceability through the life of the timber piles
  • Provided a 10+ year maintenance schedule outlining timeframes for specific repairs and activities
  • Identified which tasks could be performed by the Town’s DPW crew and which would require contractor involvement
  • Included preliminary repair cost estimates, adjusted for inflation for activities projected beyond a five-year timeframe
